Firstly, there are "Transfer Tiles" whereby a design is applied by a transfer method before firing (generally giving a more detailed and intricate design but with a "flat" appearance).

Secondly, the "Tubeline" Tiles". In this case the tiles are made in a four stage process - after a biscuit firing, an outline design is created. Then this is handpainted with coloured glazes, after which a second firing completes the process. The result of this technique gives more of a "relief" appearance.
